Parent playbook
Set up RoxWhy for a student, run a first session together, keep uploads and AI use safe, and know what to check each week.
You do not need to master the product. You need four things: the right account, a first session that uses real schoolwork, a clear line on what AI may and may not do, and a weekly look at whether the student is actually learning.
RoxWhy can explain, quiz, plan, track marks, estimate ATAR ranges, and keep a tutor relationship across weeks. It cannot replace a teacher, guarantee a mark, or sit the assignment for the student.
Decide who owns the account
- Open Sign in with an email you can recover later.
- Finish setup with a name and a primary subject. Learning level can stay Self-directed, or be School, University, or Professional. Learning goal (optional) can stay blank. Setup does not create a Tutor or an enrolment. If you opened setup from a RoxWhy page, finishing returns to that page. Otherwise it opens Today.
- Write down which email owns the workspace. Support, billing, and AI-token history attach to that address.
A common setup is a parent email for billing and access, with the student using that signed-in browser at home. If the student must have their own login, keep a record of that email too. Do not share magic links in a group chat.

The 20-minute setup you can sit through
Do this together. The student should type.
- Follow Your first 15 minutes with one piece of this week's work.
- Watch for a useful, checkable answer, not a long lecture.
- Ask the student to explain the idea back without reading the screen.
- Agree the rule below before they use it alone.
If that first answer is generic, upload one allowed handout into Knowledge and ask RoxWhy to use that file.
The house rule that keeps this useful
The student attempts the question first. RoxWhy may hint, explain, quiz, and outline. It does not submit the assignment. Work that attracts marks is checked against the teacher's criteria.
What to allow, and what to keep off the system
Good first uploads: class notes, teacher handouts, worksheets, a short reading, a draft outline, assignment criteria if the school allows it.
Keep off the system: other students' work, medical or identity documents, passwords, full payment details, and anything the school says must not go into an AI tool. Remove names and extra personal details where you can.

How billing and tokens work in practice
RoxWhy meters AI work with AI tokens. Short questions are cheap. Long documents, deep reasoning, research, visuals, and writing use more.
Starter is for trying the workspace: Chat, knowledge bases, RoxBots, and Roxy Tutor. Scholar adds more regular capacity plus Academic Tracker, Study Planner, Cell Studio, and ATAR Estimator where the plan includes them.
Check Pricing, Plans and billing, and AI tokens. Look at AI Token History in the account menu if usage looks surprising.
What to look at once a week
Sit with the student for ten minutes. Open the workspace together.
Ask:
- What can you explain now that you could not last week?
- Which question did you get wrong, and what did you do next?
- Are knowledge bases still organised by subject?
- If Roxy Tutor is in use: what does that Tutor's Today tab say, and is a review due? The study sidebar's Today page is a separate next step.
- If marks are tracked: which subject is below target?
- Does token use match the study they actually did?
Do not use time spent, chat count, or tokens as proof of learning. Look at missed questions, Mastery evidence, and schoolwork.
If they use Roxy Tutor, the supporter rules are in the Roxy Tutor guide: do not answer diagnostic or Mastery questions for them.
Healthy support
- Sit nearby for the first few sessions, then fade to a weekly check.
- Praise an honest "I don't know" during a diagnostic. That is useful evidence.
- Do not treat a generated quiz score or a fluent chat as a report-card result.
- Keep school policy in the room. If the school bans AI for an assessment, that assessment stays off RoxWhy.
