Roxy Tutor: End-to-End Guide

Roxy Tutor is a continuing one-to-one learning relationship. It remembers the learner's subject, stage, goal, schedule, teaching preferences, selected sources, conversations, and Mastery progress.

The most important distinction is:

Tutor chat teaches and supports. Use it to ask questions, request another explanation, discuss mistakes, or work from attached sources.
The Mastery Path measures progress. Its diagnostic, questions, explain-back checks, feedback, reviews, and completion rules decide what the learner has demonstrated.

A chat response alone does not complete an objective. The learner must pass the check presented by the Mastery Path.

What the Tutor provides

The Tutor can help a learner understand and practise. It cannot guarantee a mark, rank, qualification, or educational outcome.

Learner quick start

For a new Tutor, follow these steps in order.

1. Create the Tutor

Choose Create Tutor, then enter:

a recognisable Tutor name;
the subject and learner stage;
one clear learning goal;
an optional target date;
the normal session length and weekly study target;
preferred study days and the correct timezone;
teaching preferences; and
any Knowledge Bases the Tutor should use.

Make the goal observable. For example, "Solve Year 9 linear equations and explain each transformation" is more useful than "Get better at maths."

The Tutor creates one continuing Mastery session for that goal. Creating extra Tutor chats does not create extra paths.

2. Complete the diagnostic

Open Today and choose Start diagnostic. If you leave and return, choose Resume diagnostic.

For a new path, expect three distinct diagnostic questions. Answer them yourself, even if you are unsure. The Tutor needs honest evidence to choose the right starting point.

Use the interactive answer card when one is shown.
Include working or an explanation when the question requests it.
Saying "I don't know" is useful evidence. The Tutor should teach a smaller step instead of treating guessing as mastery.
Only one active assessment question should be presented at a time.

After the required diagnostic evidence has been collected, choose Build my path if the path is not built automatically.

3. Read the Mastery Path

Open Progress to see the objectives selected for the goal. Use Why this path to understand how the goal, learner stage, diagnostic answers, and gaps influenced the sequence.

An objective may be not started, in progress, mastered, or waiting for a later review. The path is a learning sequence, not a list the learner manually ticks off.

There is no separate switch to activate the path. Once the path exists, return to Today and choose Start today's lesson. If a question is already open, choose Resume question and finish it first.

4. Follow Today

Today is the learner's home base. It reads the current Mastery state and selects the most useful next action. This may be to:

finish the diagnostic;
begin the next objective;
continue an unfinished objective;
answer a pending question;
revisit a gap;
complete a due review; or
recognise that the path is complete.

Do not choose an objective only because it looks interesting. Following Today keeps prerequisites, unfinished work, and review timing in the correct order.

5. Learn, answer, and use feedback

A normal learning loop is:

Read the teaching prompt or explanation.
Ask for a hint, example, or different explanation when needed.
Complete the quiz or explain the idea back in your own words.
Read the feedback, including what was correct and what still needs work.
Retry when ready, or let the Tutor teach the missing step first.

Correct evidence advances the objective according to the Mastery rules. Incorrect or incomplete evidence does not erase earlier learning. It records a gap and gives the Tutor a reason to reteach, scaffold, or schedule more practice.

If the page is reloaded, the Tutor should return to the same pending question or next action. Do not start a separate chat to escape an unfinished Mastery check.

Tutor messages support normal Markdown and mathematical notation, including rendered LaTeX. For example, an expression such as \(x^2 + 2x + 1\) should appear as formatted mathematics rather than raw control characters.

6. Return for scheduled review

Learning is not always complete immediately after a correct answer. Some knowledge is checked again later through spaced review.

When a review becomes due, Today places it ahead of new material. Complete the review so the Tutor can confirm that the knowledge was retained, not only recognised once.

7. Complete the path

The path is complete when every required objective has satisfied the native Mastery rules and no required review remains due. A long conversation, many study-tool results, or reaching the weekly time target does not complete the path by itself.

When the current path is complete, review the original goal. The learner can keep the Tutor for questions and revision, refine the goal, or create a new Tutor for a genuinely different learning relationship.

How the schedule works

The schedule guides behaviour without locking the learner out of help.

Preferred study day: Today offers the planned lesson or review.
Rest day: Today explains that the session is optional and asks the learner to confirm an extra catch-up session before starting planned work.
Weekly target already reached: the learner can still continue, but must confirm that the extra practice is intentional.
Missed day: Mastery is not reduced. Unfinished work remains available and the next visit recalculates the most useful action.
Due review: a due retention check can take priority over new material.

The weekly rhythm records focused Tutor activity and study days. Session time is measured from the start of a learning turn until it finishes, including time spent completing its interactive card. The schedule is a planning guardrail, not proof of mastery and not a punishment system.

Tutor chats and supplementary study tools

Use New tutor chat when a fresh conversation would be easier to follow. The new chat still receives the Tutor's goal, subject, stage, teaching approach, source bindings, and a read-only snapshot of Mastery progress.

Use supplementary tools when the learner needs preparation:

Practice Quiz or a deep question for extra practice;
Learning Pack for a concept map and interactive review;
Visualize for a diagram or visual explanation;
Deep Solve for a guided multi-step solution; and
Deep Research for a structured, sourced investigation.

These tools do not mark a Mastery objective complete. Return to Today and pass the native check when the learner is ready.

The canonical Mastery chat cannot be deleted because it anchors the Tutor's learning path. Other Tutor chats can be renamed or deleted. To remove the entire relationship, archive the Tutor and then use Delete permanently.

A simple routine for every learner session

Before the session

Open the Tutor and read Today.
Check whether the action is a new lesson, pending question, or review.
Set aside the normal session time and remove obvious distractions.

During the session

Attempt the work before asking for the full answer.
Ask for a hint or another representation when stuck.
Show working and explain reasoning where requested.
Read feedback before retrying.
Use a study tool only when it helps prepare for the Mastery check.

At the end

Confirm that no question is still waiting for an answer.
Open Progress and state what was learned and what remains difficult.
Note the next planned study day or due review.

How to introduce the Tutor to a learner

Use this 10-to-15-minute walkthrough when onboarding a student, child, client, or class member.

For a parent, teacher, coach, or account holder

The supporter's role is to protect the learning process, not to supply the learner's diagnostic or assessment answers.

Before learning begins

Agree on a specific goal and appropriate learner stage.
Confirm the education system, curriculum, syllabus, or course context where it matters.
Choose a realistic schedule rather than an aspirational one.
Attach only material the learner is allowed to use.
Ask how the learner prefers to be helped, but let evidence determine progression.
Explain the difference between native Mastery checks and optional study tools.

Review once a week

Open Progress with the learner and ask:

"What can you now explain without help?"
"Which mistake keeps appearing?"
"What evidence moved this objective forward?"
"Is a review due, or is a question unfinished?"
"Does the path still match the goal and current course work?"
"What will you do on your next planned study day?"

Look for objective evidence, feedback, remaining gaps, and due reviews. Do not use chat count, time spent, or AI-token use as a substitute for learning evidence.

Healthy support boundaries

Do not answer diagnostic or Mastery questions for the learner.
Do not treat a supplementary quiz or generated solution as proof of mastery.
Do not force repeated retries without first addressing the feedback.
Do not interpret a rest day as failure or reduce Mastery for a missed day.
Do check high-stakes facts, calculations, assessment instructions, and source quality with a teacher or authoritative source.

Trusted sources, privacy, and safety

Attached Knowledge Bases can contain class notes, worksheets, a syllabus, readings, or revision material. Required sources remain selected inside a bound Tutor chat so the relationship stays consistent.

If an answer is generic, check that the correct source is attached and fully processed, then ask the Tutor to use a named document. If the material does not contain the answer, ask the Tutor to say so rather than guess.

Do not upload passwords, payment details, unnecessary personal information, other students' private work, or material the learner is not permitted to use with an AI service. See Knowledge Bases and Uploads and Privacy and Data.

AI tokens and voice

Roxy Tutor uses the account's existing AI-token balance. There is no separate Tutor wallet. Usage varies with the selected model, conversation length, source retrieval, and study tool. The account holder can review the exact Tutor debits in AI Token History.

If a Tutor turn fails before it completes, it should not advance Mastery. Any reserved token amount should be released or reconciled; use AI Token History to check the exact result.

Read-aloud requires an available text-to-speech service. Speech input also requires browser microphone permission. Text learning remains available if voice is unavailable. See AI Tokens and Top-Ups.

Pause, archive, and delete

Pause temporarily blocks new Tutor activity, including an already-open Tutor tab.
Resume returns a paused Tutor to active learning.
Archive removes the Tutor from normal active use while retaining it.
Restore makes an archived Tutor available again.
Delete permanently appears after archiving. It deletes the Tutor, Mastery Path, and all linked chats. Attached reusable Knowledge Bases remain in the account.

Troubleshooting

Frequently asked questions

Is a Tutor the same as a normal chat?

No. A Tutor is a durable relationship with one goal, schedule, source context, and Mastery Path. New Tutor chats remain inside that relationship.

Does a new Tutor chat create or restart the path?

No. It keeps the same path and receives a snapshot of the current progress.

Can a practice quiz, Learning Pack, or Deep Solve complete an objective?

No. These tools help the learner prepare. Only the native Mastery check updates authoritative progress.

Does a wrong answer reset the learner's progress?

No. It records feedback and a remaining gap so the Tutor can reteach or provide another check.

Can the learner study on a rest day?

Yes. The learner confirms an optional catch-up session. The schedule guides the weekly rhythm; it is not a lockout.

How do I know what to do next?

Return to Today. It should present one recommended action based on the latest Mastery and schedule state.

When should I contact support?

Contact support when the displayed state does not match the completed action, the same technical error repeats, source processing does not finish, or a token entry cannot be explained. Include the Tutor name, subject, action attempted, approximate time, and visible error. Use Contacting Support or RoxWhy Support.
