What you can and can't see
As a payer you see usage and spend, not your child's conversations. Here's exactly what that means, and why.
When you pay for a student, RoxWhy shows you how much they use it, but not what they talk about.
What you can see
For each linked student, on your Students page:
- credits they've used this month
- how many AI replies they've had
- which AI models they've used
- the last day they were active
You can also see your own account's credit history: every plan grant, top-up and deduction.
What you can't see
- the questions your child asks
- the tutor's answers
- files they upload, their knowledge bases and notebooks
This applies to every payer, without exception. There's no setting to turn it off.
Why we designed it this way
Students learn by asking "silly" questions. The questions that matter most are often the ones a student is embarrassed to ask: "I still don't get fractions", "what does this word mean?", "I've been pretending to understand this for weeks." If students think a parent might read every chat, many stop asking those questions, and the tutor stops being useful.
Teenagers need some privacy to build independence. Learning to manage your own study, including when and how to ask for help, is part of growing up. Australian privacy guidance for young people increasingly recognises that teenagers have their own privacy interests, separate from their parents'.
It keeps the tutor honest about its job. RoxWhy is a place to learn, and we want students to trust it the way they'd trust a good tutor.
Staying involved, without reading chats
Usage numbers tell you whether RoxWhy is being used, and roughly how much. For the rest, the best tool is a conversation:
- Ask your child to show you something they learned with RoxWhy this week.
- Sit with them for a session, especially at the start or with younger children.
- Agree on house rules: when RoxWhy is for homework help, and that it's not for writing work they'll hand in.
- Talk about what to do if the tutor says something odd or upsetting: tell you, and tell us.
What about safety?
Privacy from parents doesn't mean nobody is looking out for students. A small number of RoxWhy staff can open a conversation, but only to help with a support request or when there's a safety concern, and every access is recorded in an audit log. See Safety and privacy.
If you have a specific concern about your child's safety, email support@roxwhy.com.au.
