Setting up for your child
Add your child as a student, what they need to do to accept, and how to link a child who already has an account.
Setting up takes a few minutes. You'll need your own email address and one for your child.
Before you start: an email for your child
Every student signs in with their own email address, because the sign-in link is sent there. It can be:
- your child's personal email, or
- a school email, if the school lets it receive outside emails, or
- an alias of your own email, such as
yourname+sam@gmail.com. Gmail, Outlook and many other providers deliver these to your inbox, which suits younger children who don't have email yet. Sign-in links for that alias come to you, so you'll open them on your child's device for them.
1. Sign in yourself
Go to Sign in and enter your email. Click the link we send you. That creates your account on the free Starter plan. You don't have to use the tutor yourself, although you can.
2. Add your child as a student
- Go to your account page and open Students.
- Under Add a student, type your child's email address and click Send invite.
- We email your child an invite from RoxWhy. It's valid for 7 days, and you'll see it listed as pending until it's accepted.
To add more children, repeat with each child's email.
3. Your child accepts
Your child opens the invite email and clicks the link. They'll be asked to sign in, using the same email the invite was sent to, and then accept. That's it: they're linked to you.
From now on:
- everything your child uses in RoxWhy is paid from your credits
- you can see their usage on your Students page
- your child signs in and learns on their own, with their own private conversations
If the invite has expired or gone missing, just send a new one.
4. Choose a plan or top up
Linked students use your balance, so make sure there are enough credits for everyone. Starter's free monthly credits are fine for trying RoxWhy out; for regular study, choose a paid plan or buy a top-up from the pricing page. See Paying and credits.
If your child already has an account
Students aged 14 or older can sign up and use RoxWhy on their own, and can pay for themselves if they're 18 or have your permission. If your child already has an account and you'd like to take over paying:
- Add them from your Students page using the email they already sign in with.
- They accept the invite.
When they link to you:
- any top-up credits they haven't used move into your account, so nothing is wasted
- any plan they were paying for is cancelled at the end of the period already paid for, so they aren't charged again
Students under 14
Children under 14 should be set up by a parent or guardian as described above, rather than signing up on their own. We recommend you sit with younger children for their first few sessions.
Unlinking
You or your child can unlink at any time from the Students page. After unlinking, your child keeps their account and goes back to paying for themselves on the free Starter plan. Their conversations and notes stay with them.
Good to know
- One person can't be paid for by someone else and pay for students. If you're linked to a payer yourself, unlink first.
- A student can only be linked to one payer at a time.
- To protect people from unwanted email, you can send up to 10 invites a day.
