Credits and Top-Ups
How RoxWhy credits are used for tutoring, writing, retrieval, mastery paths, and AI-powered learning workflows.
RoxWhy uses credits to meter AI-powered learning activity. Credits are one currency across every AI model, and they help parents and students understand capacity across tutoring, writing, retrieval, research, visualisation, and mastery workflows.
What uses credits
Credits can be used by:
- Chat.
- Solve.
- Quiz generation.
- Research.
- Visualize.
- Co-Writer.
- Books.
- Mastery Path sessions.
- Retrieval over uploaded knowledge bases.
- Memory and other AI-assisted workspace actions.
Adding files to a knowledge base doesn't use credits at the moment, and the Task Board never does.
Why usage changes
Credit usage is not the same for every message. It can increase when:
- A larger, more capable model is chosen. Models cost different amounts, and the models you can choose depend on your plan.
- A prompt is long.
- The conversation already has a lot of context.
- A large document or knowledge base is retrieved.
- The student asks for detailed reasoning.
- The workflow creates quizzes, research, writing, diagrams, or structured study material.
- The tutor uses memory, source context, or tools to answer.
Short questions usually use less capacity than long research, writing, or multi-step reasoning tasks. Balances are shown to one decimal place, because many replies cost less than one credit.
Monthly plan credits
Plans include monthly credits. These are intended for regular tutoring and study work. Plan credits reset at each renewal and don't roll over. Your balance is on your account page, and Credit history lists every grant, purchase, and use.
If a student studies heavily during exams or assignment periods, monthly credits may run down faster than usual.
Top-ups
Top-ups add extra credits when a heavy study session needs more capacity. Top-up credits last 12 months from purchase, and plan credits are always used first. Buy top-ups from Pricing or your account page.
Before buying a top-up, check:
- The correct RoxWhy account is signed in.
- If a parent pays for the student, the parent buys the top-up from their own account.
- The top-up amount and price are correct. Prices are in Australian dollars and include GST.
- Stripe checkout opens successfully.
Failed purchases
If checkout fails:
- Do not retry repeatedly.
- Check the account email.
- Note the top-up amount or plan.
- Note the approximate time.
- Contact support.
Use Contact or email support@roxwhy.com.au.
Unexpected usage
Check Credit history on your account page first. If usage still looks higher than expected, include:
- Account email.
- Approximate date and time.
- Workflow used, such as Chat, Solve, Quiz, Co-Writer, Books, Mastery Path, or Research.
- Knowledge base or document involved.
- What the student asked RoxWhy to do.
- Screenshot or copied error text if available.
Long context, uploaded source retrieval, larger models, and advanced workflows can legitimately use more credits. Support can help separate normal high usage from a technical issue.
Parent checklist
- Check the plan allowance before a heavy study period.
- See each linked student's credit use on your Students page.
- Explain to the student that long research and writing tasks use more capacity.
- Use top-ups only when the student needs extra study capacity.
- Contact support before repeated failed checkout attempts.
